Blanche Nevile School for Deaf Children, North London
Blanche Nevile School is a well-known and highly regarded School for Deaf students. Its history dates back to 1895 when it first opened.
We are an exciting, innovative and successful provision for deaf children aged 3 – 16. The Secondary school is co-located with Fortismere School and the Primary school is co-located with Highgate Primary.
The post is currently for working in the Secondary School. However, the expectation is that staff may also work in the Primary School. The successful candidate will join a small team of skilled BSL Tutors at Blanche Nevile.
The school is on a journey to ‘Outstanding’ following a ‘Good’ Ofsted (February 2023).
“Pupils enjoy coming to this special school. They feel safe and they are happy. All pupils learn British Sign Language (BSL) as well as English. Communication threads through everything at the school. BSL is a vital and vibrant aspect of school life. Pupils and adults communicate throughout the day with humour and warmth.” (Ofsted 2023).
Secondary works in partnership with Fortismere School and Primary works in partnership with Highgate School. We offer ‘The Best of Both Worlds’; British Sign Language and English, small class specialist teaching and high quality inclusion. We have a skilled team of deaf and hearing staff with a commitment to a child centred sign bilingual approach.
We are looking for an experienced BSL Tutor to plan and deliver a British Sign Language curriculum up to Level 4 or higher for Deaf and hearing pupils, parents and staff. The successful candidate will:
- Have excellent planning and differentiation skills
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Have a qualification to teach Signature Level 1 to 4, or higher
- Have energy and enthusiasm and a commitment to work as part of a team
- Availability to work up to 6.00pm on some evenings
- Have experience of teaching and formally assessing BSL
- Be familiar with and practised at using formal assessments
