About Haringey
Haringey is a fantastic place to live and work – the world in one borough. A place brimming with creativity, personality, radicalism, and community. It is a place where we stand up for each other. A place that is proudly distinctive. We’ll be celebrating all this and more as the “rebel borough” when we are the 2027 London Borough of Culture.
Our history champions change-makers and everyday rebels; revelling in our differences, battling discrimination, championing equality, and doing things our own way. Haringey’s people are a huge asset, with knowledge, expertise, and passion. Our staff members embody our organisational values: Caring, Creative, Courageous, Collaborative and Community-focused. These values keep us looking forward, ambitious for the future, and continuously striving to do our very best for all of our residents.
About the role
This is a new role within the recycling, waste and enforcement team, responsible for all aspects of managing the current integrated waste contract and other waste and enforcement contracts valued at over. £22m p.a.
You will proactively identify and analyse the impact of waste legislation, Government guidance, value for money, best practice, resource allocation and research findings, to ensure that the service is appraised and well placed to respond to change. The role will assist in the “waste commissioning programme” as part of our vision for waste and cleansing services from 2027 which will tie into requirements and service changes under the “Simpler Recycling” agenda.
Reporting to the Head of Recycling, Waste and Enforcement, you will be responsible for developing and delivering service plans and ensuring that the Council fulfils its business objectives and statutory responsibilities whilst instilling a culture of change, innovation and challenge across the service managed.
You will be leading a team of motivated and passionate professionals to ensure that Haringey is a better place to live, work and visit.
About the team
The Council is part of the North London Waste Authority who are currently renewing long term (30-40 years) projects and services with the value of circa £1.2billion. Under forthcoming legislative changes to the Environment Bill, the waste and recycling landscape may significantly change, and the waste management team will need to lead on the development and implementation of such changes to ensure residents enjoy the benefits of a cleaner Haringey.
The waste team is a small but dynamic service that sits within the Environment and Resident Experience Directorate which delivers a range of universal front line services to all residents and business in the borough. The Council’s waste management contract has a value more than £277,510,531 and is due for renewal in 2027. The waste management functions are a major political priority of central government, LB Haringey, and the Mayor of London, and forms a major part of the Council’s Corporate Delivery Plan.
About you
We are seeking a candidate with a degree or equivalent qualification, or substantial experience and knowledge in contract management, service change, and commercial acumen to enhance the business development of our commercial services, preferably within the waste management sector. The ideal candidate will possess proven project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong communication skills are essential, including the capability to write reports and briefing documents, as well as deliver clear and engaging presentations on complex issues and concepts. Additionally, we value an innovative approach to problem-solving to ensure success in this role.
Working for Haringey
