About Haringey
Haringey is a fantastic place to live and work – the world in one borough. A place brimming with creativity, personality, radicalism, and community. It is a place where we stand up for each other. A place that is proudly distinctive. We’ll be celebrating all this and more as the “rebel borough” when we are the 2027 London Borough of Culture.
Our history champions change-makers and everyday rebels; revelling in our differences, battling discrimination, championing equality, and doing things our own way. Haringey’s people are a huge asset, with knowledge, expertise, and passion. Our staff members embody our organisational values: Caring, Creative, Courageous, Collaborative and Community-focused. These values keep us looking forward, ambitious for the future, and continuously striving to do our very best for all of our residents.
About the role
We are looking for a proactive and dedicated Estates & Neighbourhoods Safety Operative to help keep our estates safe, clean and welcoming for residents. In this mobile role, you will carry out regular site inspections, address health & safety concerns, identify repairs, and action fire risk and maintenance issues across neighbourhoods. You’ll also undertake a variety of cleansing tasks—from removing graffiti to clearing refuse and blocked chutes—using specialist equipment where required. As a key onsite presence, you will respond to emergencies, remove hazards, secure vulnerable areas and ensure council vehicles and equipment are used and maintained safely
About the team
You’ll join our committed Estates & Neighbourhoods Safety Team, part of Housing Services & Building Safety within the Placemaking and Housing Directorate. The team works collaboratively to protect residents’ safety, support neighbourhood management, and uphold high standards across all council‑managed estates. You will work closely with the Team Leader, Neighbourhood Managers, Tenancy colleagues, and other internal services to provide a joined‑up response to issues that arise. Daily interaction with residents is also central to the role, ensuring they have the right advice, feel supported, and know their estates are being responsibly cared for.
About you
You’ll bring hands‑on experience using cleaning materials and equipment, identifying repairs, and working with the public, including vulnerable residents. You are someone who can work independently, manage manual handling tasks, drive Council vehicles, and maintain accurate records. Strong communication skills, a calm and helpful approach, and an understanding of health & safety are essential. You’ll also have practical maintenance knowledge, awareness of safeguarding and equalities, and the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations. A driving licence and additional languages are desirable but not essential. Above all, you’re someone who takes pride in creating safe, clean and supportive communities.
