About the Role

The role described is that of a community-based worker within Haringey’s Maya Angelou Family Group Conference Service. This service operates as part of a team of practitioners, with the primary responsibility of coordinating and facilitating Family Group Conferences (FGC) throughout the London Borough of Haringey. The core objective of this role is to support family members in identifying solutions to issues or concerns raised by professionals and collaboratively developing a Family Action Plan to address these concerns effectively.
The community-based worker’s responsibilities are centered around assisting families in finding resolutions to the challenges they are facing. This involves fostering communication, collaboration, and problem-solving among family members to create a comprehensive plan of action. The Family Group Conference Service operates under the guidance of a Family Group Conference Coordinator, and the community-based worker plays a crucial role in delivering these plans to families across Haringey in a timely manner.
In essence, this role is dedicated to promoting family empowerment and self-determination by facilitating constructive discussions and action plans within a supportive community framework. It emphasizes the importance of involving families in decision-making processes, working alongside professionals, and ensuring that the concerns of all stakeholders are addressed effectively.

About You

The role involves responding to referrals for Family Group Conferences (FGCs) from various Children’s Social Care teams. The primary responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating FGCs with the wider family and professional network to make decisions regarding children and young people in need of care and protection, in line with the Children’s Act and Every Child Matters 2003 document.
  • Implementing time-limited, solution-focused, and intensive interventions to achieve the goals of the FGC.
  • Respecting and preserving the authority of the family during the FGC process.
  • Ensuring all family members and connections are invited to the conference; collecting and reflecting the views of absent members.
  • Presenting all evidence, including family assessments, to families for consideration during the FGC.
  • Collaborating with referring social workers and family network members while maintaining an independent stance aligned with the FGC model; conducting preparatory work with parents and the wider family.
  • Engaging with families with complex needs and diverse backgrounds to find suitable solutions and achieve the best outcomes for children.
  • Supporting children through direct communication and ensuring their centrality in the FGC process.
  • Organizing family meetings to develop the family plan and distributing it within agreed timeframes.
  • Maintaining accurate records for FGC purposes.
  • Offering high-quality FGCs to assist families in making decisions for their children and young people.
  • Delivering the service in accordance with Haringey Children’s Social Care guidance, procedures, and Family Rights Group standards for FGCs.
  • Maintaining confidentiality during and after employment with Haringey Council, following Haringey policies and Data Protection Laws.
  • Adhering to the council’s requirements for storing and protecting personal information, in compliance with Data Protection Laws.
