Haringey’s vision for the future is one of sustainable growth, in housing and jobs and on helping our residents and businesses take advantage of that growth.

We have got huge ambitions for Haringey. As the shape of local government continues to change, we are determined to rise to the challenge and find new ways to ensure that our residents enjoy the best opportunities in life. Working at Haringey gives you the opportunity to play a part in meeting those ambitions on behalf of everyone who calls the borough their home.

About the role

The Environment and Neighbourhoods directorate delivers a range of universal front line services to all residents and business in the borough. The Council’s waste management contract has a value more than £277.5m and is due for renewal in 2025. The waste management functions are a major political priority of central government, LB Haringey, and the Mayor of London, and forms a major part of the Council’s Corporate Delivery Plan.

The Council is part of the North London Waste Authority who are currently renewing long term (30-40 years) projects and services with the value of circa £1.2billion.  Under forthcoming legislative changes to the Environment Bill, the waste and recycling landscape may significantly change, and the waste management team will need to lead on the development and implementation of such changes to ensure residents enjoy the benefits of a cleaner Haringey.

As Project Accountant, you will support the Head of Service and Corporate Finance to contribute to the corporate and financial strategy of the waste commissioning programme including leading on analysis of the financial data and financial models within the options appraisal provided by external waste consultants for decision support in relation to the waste commissioning programme. The role will also perform financial forecasting, reporting, and operational metrics tracking in relation to service budgets to achieve the Council’s future financial and corporate strategies.

About you

You should have  experience of reviewing and analysing financial data and creating financial models for decision support for large scale capital or revenue projects.   A relevant degree or professional part/fully qualified (CCAB) is essential.

You should be able to  demonstrate business and commercial acumen skills that will contribute to the Council’s medium term financial strategy. We are looking for an individual who can report on financial performance of service budgets and prepare for regular leadership review.

You will be an enthusiastic, self-motivated and organised person to join our busy team and be able to demonstrate initiative and the ability to manage complex plans, prioritise and coordinate resources to deliver business priorities within time constraints.

Naturally, you’ll have excellent interpersonal, persuasion, and negotiation influence skills to manage communications with stakeholders at all organisational levels. You will be able to write and present complex information suitably for a varied audience including public arenas and you will be an excellent communicator, organiser, commercially aware, use your own initiative and be solution-focused.

To succeed, you will need good knowledge of evaluating financial performance, cost analysis processes and analysis of trends and forecasts. You must be able to demonstrate excellent organisational and communication skills and have advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications, including Excel. Whilst an interest in environmental services is advantageous, the ability and determination to deliver financial projects successfully is essential.
