About Haringey

We are investing in creating a better borough for all our residents and improving the lives of children and young people in Haringey is our first corporate priority. We are located in the north of the capital with a population of approximately 250,000 people and a growing population of 0–19-year-olds. We are a diverse and fast-changing borough and tomorrow’s leaders, artists and innovators are busy growing up here.

Haringey Council is transforming its services for children and young people, and have already made exciting, innovative changes as we strive for excellence in all we do. We are a council with high ambitions; a place to work that is full of energy and focus. Our teams have passion, integrity and commitment, and people who join us, do so as they see Haringey Council as a learning organisation, and the people that work here strive for continuous improvement in their practice, aiming high to ensure we provide outstanding outcomes for our children.

About the Role

As an Education Welfare and Child Employment Officer, you would be responsible for assisting the Haringey Education Service and Haringey schools in developing, implementing, and monitoring policies and practise to secure improved attendance at school and to support the agenda for raising the achievement of Haringey pupils.

You would be expected to work with families, schools, and other agencies within the framework of child protection procedures to promote the welfare and safety of Haringey’s young people.

This role is also responsible for managing and implementing policy and issues of work permits for children and young people in part time work. A significant portion of the role will be to ensure compliance with all aspects of legislative framework and local by laws in relation to child employment and child performance.

You will be responsible for taking proactive measures to ensure that children and young people are employed and/or perform in a safe environment such as we will not be detrimental to their health, welfare, and education. This includes visiting local businesses to advice on legislation for under 16 employees.

About You

The Schools and Learning Service ensure that the education provision in Haringey is of high quality for all pupils and young people. All teams within the Service work within the Borough Plan Priority 2 framework of ensuring that every young person, whatever their background, has a pathway to success for the future, including access to high quality education, employment, and training.

The Service is exceptionally busy throughout the year and is a challenging place to work. You will have excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills and the ability to successfully influence a variety of audiences.  You will have experience of working with school aged children and with families from diverse backgrounds.

Applicants must also have an ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with children, young people, and families from diverse backgrounds and with colleagues and other agencies. It is also desirable that you have had experience of working in a local authority in an investigative enforcement capacity and experience of court work.

You will be organised, methodical and able to manage and prioritise your own workload. You will be competent with ICT packages.
