About Haringey
Haringey is a fantastic place to live and work – the world in one borough. A place brimming with creativity, personality, radicalism, and community. It is a place where we stand up for each other. A place that is proudly distinctive. We’ll be celebrating all this and more as the “rebel borough” when we are the 2027 London Borough of Culture.
Our history champions change-makers and everyday rebels; revelling in our differences, battling discrimination, championing equality, and doing things our own way. Haringey’s people are a huge asset, with knowledge, expertise, and passion. Our staff members embody our organisational values: Caring, Creative, Courageous, Collaborative and Community-focused. These values keep us looking forward, ambitious for the future, and continuously striving to do our very best for all of our residents.
About the role
You will lead a small team of claims handlers and collaborate with our external legal partners to deliver effective claims service within the Council’s Insurance Section, adhering to relevant legislation, policies, and procedures. This role demands financial acumen, as you will be responsible for making and managing timely and accurate claim settlements within your delegated authority limits. Great leadership and service improvement experience are essential to enhance the service provided to our internal and external stakeholders. Reporting directly to the Risk and Insurance Manager, your focus will be on delivering an excellent customer experience, maintaining high performance levels, and fulfilling key strategic accountabilities. Occasionally, you will represent the Insurance Section in internal and external meetings and conferences.
About the team
You will be part of a small friendly close-knit team of professionals, where we all support each other, with extensive experience of working for local authorities. The Insurance team is part of the Audit and Risk Management service, which includes internal audit, counter fraud and risk management. The insurance team also works very closely with the legal and governance team in responding to claims.
About you
The successful candidate will have existing management experience and a proven track record of handling and defending complex claims at a senior level. You should be able to work confidently and independently with minimal supervision while providing training and guidance to other claims handlers. Ideally a qualified Solicitor or Chartered Legal Executive, you will possess excellent communication skills to engage clearly, confidently, and empathetically with a diverse range of groups including residents, solicitors, insurers, elected members, senior leaders, and other stakeholders. You will have comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation related to insurance claims, such as the Highways Act 1958, Health and Safety at Work Acts, and Pre-action Protocol for Personal Injury Claims. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong analytical skills, a keen eye for detail (particularly regarding legislative changes), and the ability to resolve issues professionally. Additionally, you will have experience in motivating employees and promoting a collaborative working culture.
Working for Haringey
At Haringey Council we are committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included, and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits of a diverse workforce so welcome applications from all ethnicities and communities so that we continue to make a difference to our residents and community. Our benefits package includes a leave entitlement of 31 days + bank holidays, potential hybrid working opportunities, health and wellbeing support, a generous local government pension scheme and a range of discount schemes across leisure and culture that provide both financial and money-saving discounts.
