Guidance on completing your application
Completing your form is the first step to telling us about yourself so that we can decide whether or not to offer you an interview.
You must tell us how your experience and skills match those needed to do the job.
Before you begin to fill in your form, you must
- Read the Job Description which describes the duties of the job and
- Read the Candidate Specification which describes the skills, experience or qualifications which are needed by the person doing the job
If you are completing a paper application, you must enter the advert reference and job title of the job you are applying for in the box on the top of the first page of the application form .
The Council operates a guaranteed interview scheme. This means that any disabled applicant who meets the essential criteria of the post will be guaranteed an interview alongside other short listed candidates. The final appointment, however, will be on merit (This does not apply in schools).
Your application must be received by the closing date. The date is clearly shown on the job advertisement. If your form is late, we will not be able to accept it . Remember that if you are applying using a paper form, your application must be posted to our response unit based in Richmond at the address below, we are unable to accept applications delivered to council offices.

Personal details
This includes your name and address and contact phone number. If you need a work permit, we will have to see evidence of your employment status before we can offer you a job.
Present or most recent employment
Give us brief details of the work you do at the moment. If you don't have a job please put "Not Employed" in the box asking for Name of Employer.
Previous employment / Work experience
You must tell us about your previous jobs or any work experience that you've had. Don't forget that you should include all your work experience, whether from paid or unpaid work, including:
- Part time work
- Voluntary or community work
- Work experience as part of a training course
- Education training and qualifications
Fill this in carefully giving us details of any courses you've attended and qualifications you've obtained. If you need to use another sheet of paper, don't forget to put your name and the reference number on the top of it.
Experience / Skills / Further information
This is the most important section of the form and it is the information you put here that will help us to decide whether to interview you.
If you are applying on-line, you can cut and paste information from a word document to this section, this enables you to draft out your application on your PC and then paste the final version to the on-line form.
Please do not attach a CV as we do not accept them. All the information regarding previous jobs and training must be entered onto the relevant sections of the application form.
The candidate specification will list all the qualities we are looking for. Make sure that you use this section to explain carefully how you meet each item on the list. Your experience may have been from previous jobs or from unpaid voluntary or community work or gained from bringing up a family. Think carefully about the skills you have and how these relate to the candidate specification.
Shortlisting and Interview
The practice, within Haringey Council, is for the employing manager to receive submitted job applications immediately after the closing date. The Manager will shortlist candidates and invite those candidates for interview. If you have not heard from us within 28 days of the closing date for the post, you should assume that you have not been successful in your application.
Please note that due to the volume of applications received, it is not possible to give feedback to applicants who have not been shortlisted.
References
The details concerning referees should be entered onto the relevant areas of the form. Please note that you should give details of people who are able to comment on your capacity to carry out the duties of the role i.e. your current manager or previous manager, do not give details of a colleague.
Relatives / Other interests
You must tell us if you are related to connected to an elected Councillor in Haringey or to a member of a school Governing body. You must tell us if you or any member of your family have financial or business interests which may conflict with your ability to do the job if you are appointed.
Criminal Convictions
If the job description says that the job is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act then you must declare any criminal convictions that you may have, whether or not they are considered to be "spent". You are also advised to read the Policy Statement on the Recruitment & Employment of Ex-offenders which is available on our website.
If you are appointed to a job that has direct contact with children or vulnerable adults, as well as some other professional posts may have to complete a form to allow a check to be made by the Criminal Records Bureau. If this applies to you, further details will be sent with the letter offering your employment.
